DIY Kitchen Shelves

One of the most frustrating things for my husband and I is that we live in an apartment. Apartment living does have its benefits (as I’m typing this, I can hear the lawn being mowed. We love that our landlord does that and many other things around our apartment complex to keep it looking nice.)

However, every. single. time. we go to Home Depot, my husband and I leave wishing we did own a home so we could do whatever we wanted with it.

Recently, however, we figured out a fun way to add space in the kitchen and to improve on the look of the kitchen! Our kitchen sink is against a plain wall. When we moved in, I originally hung up some cute little signs I found on Pinterest to help fill in the space. It was cute, but we started talking about how nice it would be to have some open shelves above the sink. We talked about it for a while and never did anything about it.

This is the space:

Finally, one day, my husband decided he would make some shelves for me! (Insert the Hallelujah chorus! ;) ). And, it turns out that it was a super simple project! We just got some boards that were the size we wanted for the shelves and some shelf brackets! My husband measured and cut the boards and sanded it to make it smooth. We talked about staining the boards, but I really liked them just how they were. He then measured where I wanted them and hung them up with the shelf brackets. Then I went to work styling them…with my coffee cups, of course!

Here they are!!

I absolutely LOVE how it looks!

DIY Kitchen Shelves

It is such a simple project and it can be done anywhere really (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc.) And, when we move, it is simple enough to take off the wall! All you need to complete this project is:

  • boards the width/length you want your shelves (or something to cut the boards to that length. I do believe if you get it from Home Depot, they can cut them for you)

  • sanding paper

  • paint or wood stain (or you can leave it like we did!)

  • shelf brackets

That’s all! Then you are free to style your shelves however you would like! I hope this might inspire some of you to do a project of your own! Be sure to let me know in the comments!

with love,
