Fresh Start for the New Year with bObsweep

Good Morning! Can you believe that the New Year is almost here!? I am still shocked by how quickly this year went by. Every year, in this in between Christmas and New Years Day, I like to take the time to reflect on the past year, plan and dream about the New Year, and try to declutter my life and mind a little.

So many of my family and friends mention that they are sad when Christmas is over and they have to take their Christmas decorations down.
While I LOVE my Christmas decorations, I usually look at this time differently. I like to take this week or so in between Christmas and New Year to prepare myself for the upcoming year. Part of that is with my house.

Has anyone else noticed that when you take your Christmas decorations down your house looks and feels cleaner? I know, I know, so many of you use the words depressing or empty. But just try (even just for a few moments) to look at it the way I do. I don’t see it as depressing or empty. I like to look at that empty space and appreciate it.

So much of our lives are filled with clutter. Lately, it has been my goal to simplify my life (That was actually my word for 2016!) So I like to look at putting the Christmas decorations away as a fresh start for my home.

Yes, I won’t have my pretty tree up or all the lights around the house, but putting everything away empties out the room and makes everything feel fresh; almost like you get a restart. (Perfect for this time of year!)

So, you might be wondering how you too can create this feeling of a fresh start (instead of being depressed because the Christmas décor needs to be packed up) for the new year! Well, keep reading!

Start by putting away your decorations

The first thing we do is take the decorations down the day after Christmas. Our son is still very excited about his new toys, so we are able to do this without him getting in our way. I’ll be honest, I still have my orange garland up because I did put a lot of work into that and I just love it! (so that’s here to stay for now). By putting all the decorations away, you have these new found empty spaces and clean looking walls and mantels. Don’t rush to fill those spaces.

Then you clean

I rarely dust during the holidays (shh, don’t tell). I just hate having to move all of my decorations to dust under them, so I will usually do a good dusting right after I take down my decorations.

Another thing I make sure to do after taking down my tree is vacuum. I don’t even know why we use a fake tree because it drops as many “needles” as a real tree, haha! Anyway, moving on...

Ok, so let me introduce you to our newest member of the family, bObi!

This little robotic vacuum has been a lifesaver this holiday season! I live in an apartment that has horrible commercial carpeting; you know, the kind that shows every single speck of dirt? So I feel like I have to vacuum multiple times a day (especially where my son sits and plays with his toys in the living room).

After we took our tree down and put away all of our decorations, I was able to turn on my bObsweep and walk away to do other things! Do you know how much time that freed up for me!?

Just for fun, the first time I turned on our bObsweep to vacuum my son's room, I went and poured an extra cup of coffee and sent my dad a video of me sitting and drinking coffee that I titled “I’m vacuuming” haha. Sorry dad, now my mom really wants one too! ;)

Since getting the bObi Classic, I have not had to vacuum, sweep, or mop my house at all! As a busy mom, this is a lifesaver!

So, back to my “fresh start for the New Year”; I turned on our bObsweep, left the room, and continued cleaning something else. (cue the hallelujah chorus ;) )

Enjoy the clean empty spaces

I don’t know about you, but when I take my decorations down, I will usually try to leave that empty space for a few days before I fill it up with something else. So many times I feel like I have to put something in that space. Empty wall? Find something to hang. Nothing on top of the dresser? Find some sort of décor to dress it up.

One day I just stopped and thought, if there was not all this clutter everywhere, then maybe I would stop feeling so stressed out.

So that is my goal this year is to clear the clutter. That does not mean I don’t want any decorations ever. I still have those things that make me smile every time I walk by them. But the things that are just there to fill that empty space…. those need to go.

And the best part? My floors will remain spotless while I am distracted with clearing the clutter, and reading books to my son, and snuggling on the couch with my hubby, and rocking my son to sleep (Yes! I sometimes run bObi while my son is sleeping! That was my first question was is it quiet enough to run while my son is asleep. Disclaimer: I do always have a fan on in his room for white noise and I don’t vacuum his room while he’s asleep, but the rest of the house is fair game!)

What about you? Do you clean up all your Christmas decorations before the New Year? Do you enjoy the clean feeling after putting it all away or are you dreading putting the decorations away?

  9. Gah! I want one so badly. I have triplets and you wouldn't believe how gross my floors can get. Maybe I'll ask for one for my birthday in February. Although, I don't think I can wait that long!

  15. New Years Eve is my time to take down all Christmas decor and pack it up. I love the sense of accomplishment and it feels less cluttered after it all goes back into storage until next year.

I would really like one of these contraptions but then I hesitate because I use vacuuming as a chore my kids. It really is a rock and a hard place. Maybe I'll get one for my bedroom only!
